Engine Shed

A 1913 Superior Engine was purchased in 2006. At the annual Thresheree and Harvest Festival, it is powered up. Seeing this engine operating has been a joy to many visitors. The long-term plan has been to build an engine shed on the south end of the Messer/Mayer Mill for this engine. There was such a structure on the Mill many years ago.

This project has been started and should be completed in 2020. Once it is completed, the engine will be moved inside and eventually hooked to the existing Mill equipment. Some of the face stone where the new shed will be attached has been removed.

Excavation and the pouring of concrete is taking place this week (11-18-2019). On Saturday (11-30-2019), a group of volunteers braved the wind and cold to backfill the outside and inside of the engine shed foundation. The fill then had to be compacted and leveled.

On January 21, 2020, the Superior Engine was moved to the foundation of the engine shed. A couple weeks before the move, the members of the Thursday crew broke the engine free from the ground to have it ready for the move. The large crane moved the engine very slowly and correctly positioned it on the concrete slab. The engine was covered with the tarp to await warmer weather.

An opportunity was presented to RHS as a donation of old lumber from a garage that needed to be dismantled in Jackson, WI. A group of the Society's volunteers spent several days (1/25-30, 2020) salvaging this lumber to be used for the engine shed.

The dedicated crew of volunteers who works at the Richfield Historical Park every Thursday will complete the construction of the engine shed.

Watch for updates as this project moves forward.
